2005 Class Project
Ashtrays on Hermosa Beach Strand
The Leadership Hermosa Beach class of 2005 was concerned about the effects of smoking in public places that occurred regularly in outdoor places in Hermosa Beach such as the Pier and the beach itself. These smokers affected others with their second-hand smoke and negatively impacted our environment when their cigarette butts got into storm drains and ended up in the ocean. As a first step to ending smoking in Hermosa Beach, the class installed smoke-free ashtrays in areas on and near the Strand most likely to attract smokers. The class was happy to see that their efforts began a process that culminated with the ban on smoking in all public places in Hermosa Beach in 2011.
