2008 Class Project

Surf Legends Memorial Fountain Fundraising

The class of 2008 raised funds for a future Surf Legends Memorial Fountain to feature a statue of Dewey Weber. The statue of the surfer will be replicated from Leroy Grannis’ famous 1966 photo of Dewey Weber on his longboard, cutting back on a wave at 22nd Street in Hermosa Beach. This photo has world-wide recognition and captures the essence of the “hot-dogging era” of the 60’s when Hermosa Beach was considered the epicenter of Southern California surfing. The statue will be cast in bronze by local artist Phil Roberts. In addition, photos of Doc Ball, Hoppy Swarts, Rick Stoner, Drew Harrison and Jim Bailey as posthumous honorees will be etched onto large granite tiles and mounted on the wall surrounding the statue. Many of the photos were taken by Leroy Grannis who is legendary in his own right as the pre-eminent surf photographer who chronicled the early days of surfing in Hermosa Beach. The Memorial Fountain will be located near the Hermosa Beach Community Center’s easterly entrance on Pier Avenue.
